This page is how PockBox compares Canadian cash advance apps: what we measure, where the numbers come from, and how often we update them. Directory pages, amount guides and reviews all point here. The fees and limits below are typical mandatory costs if you qualify for advertised pricing. Confirm the in-app number before you accept.

PockBox earns a commission from some of the apps listed on our comparison pages. That does not change the fees, limits or eligibility we report. How we pick

What we compare

Every comparison on PockBox uses the same axes: how much you can get, what it costs in dollars, how long funding takes, whether a monthly plan is required, whether the app reports to a credit bureau, and where the company has actually published that it operates. We do not assign numeric scores. There is no published Canadian scoring methodology to defend them, and a 1-to-10 table would pretend a precision we do not have.

Cost is stated in dollars first, percentages second. A $14 establishment fee on $100 is clearer than “14%”. Optional tips, express upgrades and subscriptions are called out separately from the mandatory fee. We never bury a real cost to make a partner look better, and we never omit a non-partner that publishes a lower fee.

Fee matrix: cost at common amounts

Typical mandatory fees if you qualify. Bree express and optional tips are extra. NotchUp’s $5 needs a payroll link. Wagepay is a licensed payday lender in British Columbia, Ontario and Alberta (licences BC 86410, Ontario 4741466, Alberta 359836) and charges an establishment fee of up to 14%.

Province eligibility matrix

Only Wagepay publishes a province list. For every other app we write Canada, no province list published. We do not write that an app covers Quebec, or any other province, unless that company has said so itself. Availability changes. Always confirm in-app for your address.

How we verify (methodology)

Primary sources only for fees and limits: brand help centres, pricing pages, in-app disclosures, and provincial licence registries when published. We do not treat review aggregators as sources of record. Bree figures in this matrix come from Bree’s Google Play listing, checked 19 August 2026. Wagepay figures come from wagepay.com/ca help centre, same date. Nyble, KOHO Cover, NotchUp and NoJuice figures are the most recent PockBox published claims, as used in those reviews.

The fee matrix uses mandatory cost at advertised pricing (Bree standard $0, Wagepay up to 14%, NotchUp $5 with payroll). Optional tips, express upgrades and subscriptions are listed separately so a $0 standard delivery is never shown next to an express fee as if they were the same product.

Cheapest qualified fee and best default pick are different questions. A $5 NotchUp advance can cost less than a $70 Wagepay advance at $500 and still be the wrong fit if you cannot link payroll, or if you need a licensed payday lender with a published contract. We separate those axes instead of collapsing the page onto cost alone.

Update cadence: commercial Canada pages carry a month-year freshness line. Material fee or limit changes update this matrix and the linked reviews. We do not publish a note that a figure is still being looked at. We cite the most recent PockBox claim, or the company’s own page when we have it.

Primary sources we cite

  • Wagepay help centre: fees, provinces, $400 a week, 60-day bank history, licences BC 86410, Ontario 4741466, Alberta 359836
  • Bree Google Play listing: $15 to $750, $0 standard, express $2.99 to $45.99, optional membership
  • Nyble: line range and membership, as published in our Nyble review
  • NotchUp: $5 payroll fee and funding claims, as published in our NotchUp review
  • KOHO Cover and NoJuice: brand marketing pages. Confirm in-app.

Where these figures appear

This matrix is the living cost table behind apps like Wagepay, Wagepay vs NotchUp vs Bree, and the Wagepay, Bree and NotchUp reviews. If two pages ever disagree, this one wins, then the reviews get updated to match.

Frequently asked questions

Which Canadian cash advance is cheapest at $500?

If you qualify: Bree standard delivery ($0) or NotchUp’s $5 flat with payroll. Wagepay can cost up to $70 (14%). Cheapest fee is not always the best fit. Limits and published province rules matter.

Is the cheapest app always the best pick?

No. Cost is one factor. Payroll-link requirements, first-limit variability, and whether you need a licensed payday lender in British Columbia, Ontario or Alberta all change the answer. We often default to Bree ($0 standard) when you can wait, and to Wagepay when you need minutes and a higher returning limit in those three provinces.

Does PockBox score apps like Overdraft Apps?

Overdraft Apps publishes editorial scores for its US-heavy directory. This Canada matrix is fee, limit and eligibility verification for Canadian products. It is not a 1-to-10 score table.

Sources as listed above. Bree checked against Google Play on 19 August 2026. Wagepay checked against its help centre the same day. Nyble, KOHO, NotchUp and NoJuice as published in those PockBox reviews. · Last checked
